Finding Freedom Through Shaking It Up

IMG_6999This week I found a new form of Freedom I had yet to tap into.  Shaking Things Up!!  I am a song person, and as I have been thinking of this idea I have the good old 1981 song in my head by The Cars, "Shake It Up, Woohoo, Shake It Up!"

Anyways, have you ever been stuck in a rut?  Just doing the same old thing, over and over again?  I'm sure we have all been there at one time or other.  This could be in any part of your life!

How about with food?  We actually talked about this very thing in my Weight Watcher's meeting in regards to our food choices.  We were asked:  What are the recipes that you cook over and over again, that you are just fed up with?  There were a lot of different answers from chicken, to salad, to oatmeal.  The most interesting thing about this discussion was how one person's rut, sounded good to another person, because they were all so different.

What about in your relationships?    I know my hubby and I struggle with this from time to time with going on the same dates-dinner and a movie.  With our kids, we can tend to let our evenings, when we have nothing going on, get dull and boring-we make dinner and then go our separate ways, not seeing each other again until it's time to give hugs at bedtime.  Just sitting around watching TV can get on my nerves real quick!

Could it be your wardrobe?  Perhaps you have a colorless closet, or only different shades of one color.  A dear friend of mine joked that at work they called her outfits the 50 shades of Grey, because that seemed to be her chosen palette.  Or maybe you're stuck in the same types of outfits-either you always wear your favorite workout clothes, or perhaps you just wear jeans and a T-shirt day in and day out, or even the same business suit and accessories.

Your Workouts?  This can be a rut for me.  I get bored very easily with repeating the same thing!!  I know I need the consistency so that I can do the random activities I desire to do, but more often than not, I have to find ways to make the track I run more interesting!

I tell you what, routine is a good thing, but sometimes, we can find ourselves trapped in the monotony of the SAME THING!  And in those times we need to find our freedom by SHAKING THINGS UP!!

Not sure this is your problem?  Let's take a look at an example.  For me, I am going to look at cooking.  I love to cook, sometimes I might even say I'm a foodie.  However, when we get really busy, such as during a sport season for my son, I can easily get into SURVIVAL mode, and get into a major rut.  Here are some ways I can tell that I'm in a rut with my cooking:

  1. I don't want to do it!
  2. I am exhausted at the thought of HAVING TO do it.
  3. It doesn't bring energy or inspiration.  In fact, I find it plain BLAH!
  4. I stick to the same few meals over and over again.

By the time I am finishing these rut cycles, we (my family and I) are hating it!  I know for myself, I get to a place where I am almost screaming inside for something different!  But until I take a stand, I am stuck!  I HAVE TO TAKE A BOLD STEP!  I HAVE TO SHAKE IT UP!

IMG_7002This was my view today as I chose to SHAKE IT UP for my work!!  Some friends of mine were so sweet and got me a rather large coffee gift certificate for hanging out with their darling kids, and the best location for that shop just happens to be in our amazing downtown library.  So, I decided that I was going to use the library balcony as my office space today (April 27th, 2015)!  And wow, did that deliver an unexpected wave of inspiration...

This small change has completely inspired me!  It is like the floodgates for my creative juices have been opened!  It has me thinking of other areas I can SHAKE UP;  I am definitely going to do this more often.

And now I turn to you, and ask, what do you need to Shake Up in your life?

It doesn't take much, just one small change, then perhaps another.  These small changes could be a start to something bigger.It's so easy to get in a rut, just pick something, here are some ideas:

  • Try a new recipe
  • Get on your bike
  • Sign up for a fun run
  • Take a class
  • If you can, go somewhere inspiring to do your work
  • Organize a space

Whatever you need to do to get inspiration, do it this week. Don't wait.
